Phased Array NDT

Shoreland Access understands that you need to focus on the day-to-day operations of your business. Avoid the confusion and difficulty of choosing the right NDT method and technique. Leave the details to our professionals while you focus on running your business. Shoreland Access is pleased to offer Phased Array Ultrasound Testing. With Phased Array Ultrasound Testing defects especially cracks can be identified and imaged.

What is Phased Array?
Phased Array Ultrasound Testing (PAUT) is an advanced method of ultrasound testing. Phased Array differs from conventional Ultrasound testing in many ways.  The most notable difference is how sound can be induced into the specimen.  A single phased array transducer can emit a series of beams at different angles to precisely flood the part with sound.  This capability is achieved by electronically manipulating up to 256 individual elements within the transducer.  On the other hand, conventional UT permits only one beam at one angle. PAUT is particularly useful in weld examination, crack detection and sizing.

How can Phased Array Testing help your company?
Because PAUT has the capability of manipulating sound waves, our technicians can adapt the instrument setup to specific part geometries that may be encountered.

PAUT lends itself well to manual, semi manual, and automated scanning systems.  This allows for quick and accurate data acquisition.

PAUT also has the ability to produce a permanent record of the raw inspection data. This allows the storage of digital data indefinitely for company records or for future evaluation unlike x-ray images which deteriorate over time. With this valuable feature, PAUT is being utilized more and more in lieu of Radiography.

What are the advantages of Phased Array Testing?

Greater probability of detection
Can be used in lieu of Radiography, eliminating radiation hazards
Adaptable to part specific inspections
Creates a permanent digital copy of inspection data

The above information provides a simplified introduction to the Non Destructive Testing method of Phased Array Ultrasound Testing. However, to effectively perform a Phased Array Ultrasound Test, several parameters need to be considered. Trust the professionals at Shoreland Access to take care of the details.
