Case Studies

Client: Ministry of Defence in conjunction with Pearson Engineering
June - September 2015

Work Involved: Shoreland Access supplied a team of 8 NDT Technicians to carry out inspections on ‘in-service’ Challenger 2 Tanks.

Inspection methods used were Dye Penetrant and Ultrasonic Testing. Shoreland developed specific Technical Procedures for the project. A total of 60 vehicles were inspected at Pearson Engineering’s headquarters based on Scotswood Road in Newcastle Upon Tyne.

Client: Calders & Grandidge on behalf of Tweddle Engineering.
November 2015

Work involved: Shoreland supplied a team of 3 Rope Access NDT Technician’s to inspect the integrity of 3 creosote storage tanks. Using Rope Access techniques on the tanks saved substantial time and money on the project as it meant there was no need for scaffolding.

Inspections consisted of Ultrasonic Testing and Magnetic Particle inspections. Thickness readings were taken on the main shell of the tank to determine any loss of thickness due to corrosion. Readings were taken at pre-determined intervals and cross referenced with previous readings. Magnetic Particle inspections were carried out on all welds, inlet pipes and nozzles. All findings were presented in a detailed report, containing drawings, readings and photographs.

Client: Nissan Motor Company Ltd
August 2015

Work Involved: Shoreland supplied a team of 5 Rope Access NDT Technician’s to carry out inspections on drop lifters in the Sunderland factory.

Inspections consisted of Ultrasonic Testing, Magnetic Particle and Borescope inspections. As with most Shoreland projects we opted to use Rope Access techniques to cut times and costs. A total of 17 Drop Lifters were inspected in total and a full report was completed for each one. The reports consisted of all ultrasonic thickness readings, Magnetic Particle inspection findings and overall visual inspection summary.

Client: Campact Ltd October
November 2015

Work involved: Shoreland supplied a team of 6 Rope Access Painters to complete painting of two Methanol storage tanks at Campact in Hexham.

All areas of the tanks were accessed with rope access techniques. Technician’s first had to clean and prepare the tank ready for painting. This was done with the use of grinders and a pressure washer.

Specialist epoxy primer and paint were used and a three coat system was used. The project lasted a total of 8 weeks.

Client: Piramal Healthcare
Date: September 2012

Work Involved: This project involved a team of Rope Access and NDT technicians to carry out inspection work to assess the integrity of the solvent lines on the high-level pipe bridge at Piramals UK site in Morpeth, Northumberland.

Dye Penetrant Inspection (DPI), Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI), and Ultrasonic Testing (UT) methods were used alongside thorough visual checks to ascertain the condition of both mild and stainless steel pipework. In addition, gantries and surrounding ancillary on site were inspected to identify any areas of concern.

Client: Jury’s Inn (Watford)
Date: September 2012

Work Involved: Working in partnership with 1759 signs, a number of Rope Access Technicians were required to provide installation work at Jurys Inn Watford hotel. The project consisted of the disassembly and removal of existing sign work, and installation of the new one.

The technicians were required to abseil from the roof of the building to reach the sign work and disassemble it using various tools. Once the existing panels had been removed and the electrics for the new sign had been wired, the new panels – weighing 40kg each - were winched down using Shoreland Access’ custom designed ‘A-Frame’. From here our technicians manoeuvred and then secured the panels into place.

Client: Shasun Pharma Solutions
Date: August 2012

Work Involved: Shoreland Access was commissioned to conduct a full NDT inspection of various solvent pipelines and a 40,000 litre mild steel Glycol tank at Shasuns site based in Dudley, Northumberland. After a full visual examination, our NDT technicians used Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) to assess the tank structure and the condition of welded parts. Ultrasonic Testing (UT) was also used to determine the wall thickness at various points of tank.

A large amount of pipeline inspection could be carried out at ground level using Dye Penetrant Inspection (DPI), however a number of Rope Access technicians were required to examine the pipeline at its elevated points.

Client: BP/Offshore Marine Management / URS Corporation
Date: July 2012

Work Involved: This project involved a team of three Marine Skippers and two Lifeboat Coxswains to pilot a hydrographic survey vessel and a safety/rescue boat on a 1km stretch of river in Rustavi, Georgia. The task involved aiding two surveyors from URS Corp in collecting valuable geological data for a proposed crude oil pipeline running from the Caspian Sea to a refinery on the Black Sea. Shoreland Access personnel were required to;

• Mobilise and de-mobilise the vessels
• Pilot the survey vessel
• Ensure all accessible areas were surveyed
• Ensure health and safety of crew

A number of small issues arose with the out board engines and boat trailers but due to the vast experience and mechanical engineering knowledge of our personnel these were soon resolved.
